Transforming structures and values

The transformation of how we conceive reality and how we function in it is a constant process; it is part of life’s and history’s cycles and in that regard is inevitable, which does not imply that the directionality of the changes is pre-determined. While there are parametric limitations (that at the same time change over time) and a diversity of random circumstances, there are also spaces where our choices and the determination to execute them carry significant weight. This means that to a lesser or greater extent we have the capacity to influence the evolution of the transformational processes. This is a transformation that includes the socioeconomic structures sustaining a certain course and a certain way of functioning of our societies.

Equally important is to recognize that the hegemonic interests that prevail in a community are usually enshrined in the values that we consciously or unconsciously profess and, therefore, in order to be able to promote a transformation that will be sustainable over time we must also thoroughly revise the messages and orientations that reach us encrypted within those values.

This assessment is valid regarding countries in the developing world who face intense and turbulent transformation processes as well as for those who hold dominant positions in the global scenario. In this issue of Opinion Sur we tackle some of these critical matters.

Cordial greeting,
