It is possible to define solutions that favor society as a whole but the complexities of human relationships, the enormous diversity of interests, ethnical and political confrontations that keep having consequences, differences in ideology, information and tradition, tinge the search and viability of those solutions. Each initiative implying social transformations oriented to the common wellbeing mobilizes those who see their privileges affected; they use the forces available to them (economic, media, political, judicial, ideological) to resist and avoid changes. In that context antagonisms are stimulated and situations that enable sustaining concealed positions that would be very hard to defend in plain sight are created. Instead of rising above the pettiness of interests that compromise the environment, social cohesion and the peaceful resolution of geopolitical differences, human beings are drawn towards antagonisms that lead us to waste the enormous potential diversity entails. Privilege counts with the disinformation it controls and hegemonic thinking’s complicity, to which it adds the ability to trigger real or irrational fears we dwell within ourselves. But if this failed, meaning if manipulated democracy was not capable of preserving their interests, there is still force to overcome those who are not alike or do not think or feel the same way.
It is true that the challenges to face are not a few and, however, facing them is part of the self-improvement path we must go through. It is a long coming march sustaining the development –and in some cases the collapse- of civilizations. It is not a question of chance that in view of the magnitude of those fears and disorientation so many people would barricade themselves in their own world and turn to alienating solutions such as addictions, meaningless consumerism, not considering others, the destructive ¨mind your own business¨. Reducing life to one’s own navel does not build wellbeing nor reduce an inch the anxiety and fears that are stirred in us day and night.
