The value of democracy is once again being questioned and many of the arguments used are legitimate. Because today there are many forged democracies, those of low intensity, democracies captured by powerful minorities. They are spurious democracies that facilitate the concentration of wealth and decision-making power in a few greedy powerful hands. They are unwanted democracies that manipulate social will and guarantee impunity for looters who subjugate peoples. Of course, these types of democracies do not serve humanity or take care of the planet. Could it be that democracy is a façade that reproduces submission and oppression with adornment?
However, there is the vision of a democracy at the full service of the peoples, the democracy that sustains fundamental human rights, the democracy of peace, equity, coexistence, the democracy of plurality and diversity, the democracy that protects nationals and long-suffering migrants, the democracy that punishes the corrupt and does not accept those who are left behind in poverty and destitution. A democracy of real justice, of assured representativeness, an electorally healthy democracy in which the citizens choose and not the owners of money. And we can continue to shape this desired kind of democracy. Will it be possible to establish it?
A challenge that needs to be carved out at the geopolitical, national, and local levels.
