Colonialism in the XXI century

A colony is a territory ruled and administered by a foreign power.
According to the United Nations, there are still 16 cases of colonialism in the XXI century, ten of which are English. One of those cases is the one of Malvinas Islands that Argentina, with the unanimous support of Latin America, is seeking to regain peacefully.

It is true that the Argentinean military dictatorship presided by General Galtieri broke with the diplomatic claim tradition and, it is also true that his military defeat accelerated the country’s return to democracy. Since then, 30 years have gone by, democratic Argentina has condemned all sorts of warmongering and vindicates its sovereignty over Malvinas Islands exclusively through diplomatic means. Malvinas Islands constitute a pilot case in order to know whether colonialism in the world will persist throughout the XXI century or if, finally, the global community will prevail and agree on putting an end to it.

Something important happened recently for the sake of both parties when opinion polls in England and several renowned British artists explicitly acknowledged that the Malvinas are Argentinean and that their country, England, should agree to return them. There are many people in England that do not take pride in their colonial past and that understand the casualties and injustices it has caused to other communities. This approach helped the Argentinean people make a much more clear distinction of the differences that exist between the English people, with whom there are multiple friendship, cultural and economic ties, and the British government mired in an anachronistic colonialist stand. All good willed Argentineans hope the imperialistic remnant in the South Atlantic will be removed and the differences with England will focus on football and rugby.

In this issue we address three critical subjects for Southern Hemisphere countries: how to face the generation, redistribution and extraction of value in building a fair and sustainable development course; an assessment of the most recent events that frame the current stage of the European crisis; and a comment clarifying the true features of Chinese financing in Latin America. We trust they will be of your interest.
