There was a time …

There was a time when harsh dictatorships proliferated throughout Latin America and more or less progressive governments committed with the general wellbeing prevailed in Europe. Today democratically elected governments that sacrifice their peoples to sustain the interests of privileged minorities (that terrifying 1% of their societies) pullulate in Europe while in Latin America prevail more or less progressive governments that are fighting against all odds to transform unfair structures, course, and way of functioning of their countries: they aim at reorienting the trajectory towards the general wellbeing.

During that other period Europe was the lighthouse of democratic reference and the focus of a certain solidarity culture. Today, its governments are part of those who generate the high winds and tides that Southern Hemisphere countries but also their own people are facing while trying to live a little bit better. There was an age, long gone, that made some of us feel ashamed and others proud; today there is a new age where what is promissory, hopeful, desired, emerges from humble nations, those that were left behind, the hard-working searchers for justice, inclusion, and sustainability.
