The clouds hovering over Europe are so dark that this month we decided to focus on what is happening in that continent. The deepening of the crisis carries along greater pain and also opportunities that, as usual, are not distributed equitably. The suffering usually sticks with the many and opportunities with the few.
With the adjustment, those in control of financial capital have been mercilessly profiting through bail-outs that function as huge mechanisms of extraction –and concentration – of value. Now the alternative of restarting growth is on the table and those powerful enough to determine the march will attempt to preserve their privileges. Beware! Because there are other options other than returning to the scheme of concentrative growth. We say yes to growth, but on different grounds. Two articles analyze the new alternatives emerging in Europe.
But the dangers of concentration are not just economic, they also affect political evolution. Economic chaos generates authoritarian adventures of the worst kind manipulating people’s indignation and disorientation. Another article focuses on the risk of reissuing old tragedies.
We hope the three texts will serve our readers stimulating reflections and better decisions.
