Democratic searches

While better ways of structuring social functioning have not yet been conceived, our democracies such as we know them are to a large extent imperfect. In them, privilege and misery, altruism and greed, rights and injustices coexist. There are voices heard over and over again while most voices are ignored. The hypocrisy of the powerful enthrones values that are implemented to their convenience. Large majorities seek to take initiative, say nothing or become silenced.

They tell us this is enrooted in the very nature of the human condition and, as such, is part of the unalterable ruggedness of mankind. It is a perspective that is necessary to consider although not to accept lightly. Because it is true that we have been long sailing in our own imperfection but also from years gone by we have discovered, learned, innovated, built and improved in the effort invested; transforming our environment and ourselves.

It is true that democracies have sheltered too much ignominy and punished innocent people; brought as much light as they did darkness; established inequity and abundance in a few tough hands; that we have learned to turn a blind eye on poverty and destitution guarding our own yearnings. There are plenty of burdens but our commitment is not just about complaining but to transform what must be transformed. We have found meaning by being part of that effort, joining a current of life worth sharing.

A path opens as we walk, but the chosen course will lead to different territories. As far as we understand it, Opinion Sur has made an effort to contribute to a desired, feasible, sustainable course. It is an input that adds to several other democratic searches of this XXI Century, which comes, hopefully it will turn out so, with firm winds for renewal.

Cordial greeting,
The Editors
