About giving advice to a person with a serious disease
My advice would be to concentrate on things the disability doesn’t prevent from carrying out well, and don’t regret the things the disability interferes with. Not to be spiritually disabled as well as physically.
Stephen Hawking, famous physicist affected with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
About a broader notion of intelligence
Today there is the notion that intelligence includes abilities in the sphere of emotions, motivation, interpersonal skills in complex and diverse situations. The consensus is that these abilities, which in the past were not considered to be a part of intelligence, might boost intellectual development as they cooperate in the daily challenge of facing complex situations and encountering original situations.

About hiding weaknesses
