Publication on “Civil Society and Social Movements: Building Sustainable Democracies in Latin America”
The Inter-American Development Bank published the book “Civil Society and Social Movements: Building Sustainable Democracies in Latin America”, that was edited by The Esquel Group Foundation and Fundación Grupo Esquel Brazil with Arthur Dormike’s coordination. The publication includes cases from Brazil, Peru, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay and Mexico. The Spanish edition will be available as from the second semester of 2008.

Acknowledgement to Miguel Murmis at Universidad Nacional de Quilmes
On April 25th, 2008, Universidad Nacional de Quilmes granted an Honorary Doctor title to Professor Miguel Murmis. The Ceremony took place within the V Research and Debate Workshop entitled “Work, property, and technology in Argentine rural world”, carried out in honor and academic acknowledgment of his work, one of the main referents of Argentine rural studies.
Professor Miguel Murmis was born in Buenos Aires in 1933. He graduated as a Professor in Philosophy and Letters at University of Buenos Aires (UBA) in 1956, and later did graduate studies in Sociology at University of California at Berkeley. He is currently a main Conicet research fellow and Honorary Professor of Universidad Nacional de General Sarmiento.
He taught and did research at UBA, University of Toronto, University of Cambridge, Maison des Sciences de l’Homme, FLACSO Ecuador and Argentina, among other universities and institutions. He also worked as a consultant to CEPAL, PNUD, IICA, IDRC, The Synergos Institute, among other national and international organizations.
He has authored several publications on rural sociology, political sociology, and occupations and poverty. His work “Studies on the Origins of Peronism”, originally published in 1971, and jointly written with Juan Carlos Portantiero, is considered a classic in Argentine political sociology. Also, his “Typology of Small Producers” is considered a key tool for rural sociology and has been vastly used for research and projects in various countries.
The Honorary Doctor title was granted to Professor Miguel Murmis at a ceremony that took place at 7 pm at the auditorium of Universidad Nacional de Quilmes, and the following people attended the event:

Porto Alegre Integrated Socio-Environmental Program
The program will be carried out by the Administration and Strategic Support Municipal Department and will focus on the following:
Improving the quality of Guaiba Lake and Cavalhada River water.
Developing urban infrastructure in order to reduce the risk of undergoing floods along Cavalhada River.
Improving the quality of environmental management in the city of Porto Alegre.
Promoting efficient municipal services regarding water, rationalization and pluvial drainage.
