The city of Buenos Aires intends to reduce the generation of waste, improve its recuperation and recycling, and diminish its toxicity. It is working so that producers take responsibility on their products. As for goals, it takes the 1.500.000 tons of waste sent to sanitary filling during 2004 as a reference and aims at reducing this amount by 30 % by 2010, 50 % by 2012 and 75 % by 2017. The final disposal of the materials -both recyclable and usable- will be forbidden by 2020. ([More information->http://www.buenosaires.gov.ar/areas/med_ambiente/basura_cero/?menu_id=21731])
Spaniards Gain Awareness of Recycling
Eighty-six percent of Spaniards report that they carry out some type of waste separation at home; in 2006 that percentage was 73%. The reason for this increase in the separation and recycling habits throughout the Spanish territory is, in the first place, the citizens’ concern for the fight against climate change. Then, awareness and publicity campaigns about separation and recycling, city government action, optimization of collection and recycle services, and the increased number of containers set up in residential areas, all play a part. The perception that the citizens themselves are mainly responsible for packaging separation has grown from 24 to 60%, ranking only behind city government in the accountability scale. Sustainable Tourism in Latin America
One of the outstanding features of the Project for the Implementation of Best Practices and Certification Support for Small and Medium-Sized Tourism Businesses, coordinated by Rainforest Alliance in several Latin American countries, is the signing of cooperation agreements with the major tourism operators in the region. The purpose of this initiative is that tourism businesses encourage their suppliers to join efforts to conserve biodiversity and reduce the negative impact of this activity.
