Perspective from the South on the United

The crisis affecting the United States will not only have domestic effects but it will also affect the rest of the world. In the Southern Hemisphere we have been exposed to countless and some times recurrent crisis situations. This is not something to take pride on yet it is a fact that has taught us a few things. For instance, that it is true that a crisis brings new opportunities along, but that those who mainly profit from them are the most daring, resourceful, better connected and informed. It is also those sectors the ones that have more ability to influence or twist public policies for their own benefit. In this issue Opinion Sur intends to offer its perspective and some modest comments for those who are now facing such a harsh storm; we do so trying not to fall in what we so much criticized in the past: providing homogeneous and canned recipes to face a huge diversity of problems that change with time and circumstances.

We are also slowly developing the section “Initiatives Worth Knowing”. There is a lot of valuable stuff going on in our countries, and to the extent possible, we would like to help disseminate it. If you happen to learn about projects, dialogues, meetings, research, proposals, materials, a valuable initiative, please share them with Opinion Sur for their assessment and eventual inclusion in the appropriate section.

As always, we hope our materials are of interest to you. Cordial greetings,

The Editors
