Facing insecurity

Roberto Sansón Mizrahi

Insecurity situations are the result of different sorts of violence (criminal, systemic and cultural) that, at the same time, emerge from unresolved conflicts. Therefore in order to face insecurity it will be necessary to resort to complementary sets of measures that are included in a comprehensive strategy although without subjecting some actions to others since conflicts and different sorts of violence require specificity in terms of approaches, policies and intervention methodologies.

Geopolitics

An Unhappy New World

Juan Eugenio Corradi

Anguish spreads through the globalized world, and especially through its once hegemonic centers. Capitalist globalization itself has generated problems that not even the economic management or the political management are capable of solving. The only thing managers attempt to do is buy time, hoping things ‘will fix themselves’. But hope is not a strategy, and the more the crisis is prolonged, and the more measures of stabilization or bailouts exacerbate it, more are the agreements and ‘social pacts’ from the postwar weakened.

Transformations

A specter haunts Europe: xenophobic and anti-European populism.

Carlos Garramón

The prolonged financial crisis that has immersed Europe into a deep economic and social deterioration, reflected in unprecedented unemployment rates (26.3 million, 10% of the block’s population), recession (that according to the last report from the European Commission will continue until 2015) and cut backs in social services, is now expressed in the surprising electoral boom of a new political phenomenon: the xenophobic, anti-European and right-winged populism.

Editors’ Note

Financial capital’s dusk

Same as empires have always followed one another; financial capital’s empire will pass as well. Its transformation is accelerated by the weight of the outrageous acts committed. The power of manipulating imperfect democracies allowed them to rise with humanity’s steering wheel but abuses, crimes, mistakes, offenses, eroded its basis: they widened inequity punishing vast majorities; reproduced poverty and destitution of hundreds of millions of beings; silenced voices and controlled media to impose the hegemony of their interests; they accelerated the destruction of the precious environment.

The transition has just begun and there is still much to do in order to complete it. However, we need to ask ourselves, where are we going? What will come afterwards? Crucial challenges to be faced since it is not only about replacing helmsmen and redistributing privileges but changing the course and supplying ourselves with methods and instruments to carve better futures that will follow the present and the presents to come. It is something resembling full democracies. That is where we aim.

Cordial greeting.
